The Dutch established settlements in the area in 1631, followed by the Swedish in 1638. The English took control of this area in the 1600’s integrating Delaware was one of the thirteen colonies to revolt against British rule in the American Revolution. Delaware declared its independence from Great Britain in June 1776 which became Delaware state. Delaware was the first state to ratify the U.S. Constitution in 1787 which earned its nickname The First State. Delaware played a role in various industries including manufacturing, mining, fishing, tourism, finance and agriculture.
